I worked with Finian in Sweeney’s Wine Merchants since I was about 16; this was always a part time job to keep me going through school and college. I finished college with an Engineering degree in 2008 and went to work in the world of Finance. I quickly moved up through the ranks in Life and Pensions company I was working for but I really always really wanted to get back into the Off-Licence trade working for myself! I kept up my interest in Wine and Craft beer and always enjoyed calling into Sweeney’s or Lilac Wines to see what was new to try. I finally made the big move and gave up my job in November 2016 taking over Lilac Wines fully in March 2017 after a short period working for Finian. I have some big ideas to develop the shop over the coming months and years so watch this space!

A fairly recent recruit to the licensed industry, I hold the WSET advanced certificate in wines and Spirits. My primary area of responsibility in Lilac Wines is the wine! Despite the diversity of world wines, I invariably return to France for my wine pleasure. (A good Argentinian Malbec comes close second) The Haut Medoc serves up my favourite style. Full bodied but not overpowering, complex and tannic. The right bank offers one of my other favourites, Pomerol. When I travel to France I get to indulge this pleasure a bit more often than might otherwise... (Helped somewhat by the prices in France!) My other weakness in life is music. With a focus on the 70’s and 80’s, Neil Young, Bowie, Genesis Jackson Browne, Pink Floyd, Lou Reed, Led Zeppelin etc, etc, etc. Plenty of heavier stuff too but just not ‘shop appropriate’! I suppose it’s a sort of wine and music matching theme.

I have had a lifelong involvement in the licensing business, wholesale and retail. I have a broad knowledge and understanding of all aspects of the trade, spirits, beers and wines. My favourite style of wines are the Italian Ripasso / Amarones. The lusher, the better. (I enjoy the occasional pint of Guinness too!) My other passion in life is motorbikes and fast cars. For those who understand and appreciate such things, I ride a highly modified Yamaha Fazer 1000. I enjoy the ‘occasional’ high speed excursion on it!
